Hand Forged Medieval Balance Scale / Scales of Justice

$295.00

Lady Justice is often depicted with a set of scales, typically suspended from one hand, upon which she balances the relative substance and value (ie the 'weight') of the available evidence and arguments on both sides of any bilateral dispute.

These one of a kind, medieval balance scales were based on examples unearthed at archeological digs in Gotland, Sweden and currently in the British Museum. The original dates from 900-1100 AD at the height of the Viking Age. Each piece was hand forged from quality A36 steel using traditional methods and hand tools only. No machining or power tools, just hammer, anvil and fire. The scales pivot on a brass fulcrum and they can be used held in the hand or hanging from the sturdy, hand forged base.

The piece is 18" tall, 13 1/2" wide and weighs 5 pounds. The base is 6" and each hanging bowl is 4".

A perfect centerpiece for your office, apothecary or home hand forged with a true passion and love for the art.

Traditional hammer finished at the anvil, wire brushed and finished with canola oil and beeswax while hot.
